Analyse the House...

Have been given the final part of our apprenticeship and it requires us to create a cabin for our architect (and their partner) based on the exemplar house.

In ways I am happy I chose the Isaacson/Davis house- its small, its easy to understand, it could easily be a cabin or a retreat. But I almost feel like I have missed out- there isnt very much to this house and exploring it seems to come up with the same things time and time again.

In order to design my cabin, I had to analyse my exemplar house under the headings of "a house is an environmental filter", "a house is a container of human activities" and "a house is a delightful experience", and I will be posting my findings on this later.

I also had to choose a site, within a given (and fictitious) site allocated in our unit. I think it is important to look at the site constraints before I explore the design constraints, so those are going up next

But for now, here are some of my cheerful iterations during the design process of this cabin.

Design is an iterative process...

The problem here was that while I had an idea of the exemplar (due to researching a LOT), I hadn't yet analysed it properly and was basically shooting in the dark (or that other metaphor involving wind...), so I had to stop, take 3 steps back and look at what I needed to do, and then think about how I was going to design this cabin.

Up next- the site.
